Literacy Programs in Rotary

What if... Rotary committed its resources to help the 900 million worldwide who cannot read or write?  What if... each Rotary Club made a commitment to help the four million adults in the USA who cannot read, sign their name, or perform simple addition or subtraction?  What if... all Rotary clubs in District 6600 provided financial and member assistance to work with those people in their communities who struggle on a day-by-day basis because they are illiterate?

All dreams begin with what if thinking.  Applied to social problems, this type of thinking has often led to many creative ideas and programs. One critical problem that our District has worked on in the past several years is how to help those people (children and adults) who have a diminished quality of life because they are unable to perform simple tasks that help them function in society.  There are many clubs in our District that have begun literacy programs that have boosted the quality of life of many people.  Incoming Governor Jim Hunt will continue the initiatives begun by Governor Chuck Stocking who provided grants and resources to help several clubs begin or expand literacy programs.

Anyone interested in helping reduce or eliminate literacy in their community, specifically with adults, should contact Governor Jim or me.  Working together, we can change what if thinking to see what we  can do and what the accomplished outcomes will be!
