Historic Moments: Rotary's emblem

8/20 -- The Rotary emblem, unchanged since 1924, was redesigned many times in the early years of the organization. One of my favorite stories of Rotary was told to me by Bob Perry, District 6600 Secretary and long time club secretary for the Rotary Club of Elyria. When the Rotary Club of Elyria was chartered on April 1, 1918, there were 20 original charter members. Kelloge Day joined the club six months later. When asked why he was not a charter member he replied, “I thought that Rotary wheel represented an automobile and it was some kind of automobile club. Since I didn’t have a automobile, I didn’t even consider joining. Later my friends in the Rotary Club of Elyria explained to me what it was all about and it had nothing to do with automobiles. That’s why I joined six months after the original charter.”

8/15 -- Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2012-13. Tanaka will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates.
